Ochrona: Stomatepia mongo jest wpisany prez Międzynarodową Unię Ochrony Przyrody do Czerwonej Księgi Gatunków Zagrożonych IUCN jako (CR) Krytycznie zagrożony (2009). This species is listed as critically endangered, likely due to very few, if any, individuals being captured around the shallow shoreline of the lake. This assessment is probably unwarranted, since this species typically inhabits the deeper, central region of the lake. However, due to the small size of the lake, and its obvious limited distribution, every effort should be made to establish this species in captivity by placing it into the hands of experienced aquarists so that its numbers can increase and provide a captive repository in case the lake suffers from mass extinctions from human polution and overfishing.
